SN - TRL FINAL AP - Transformational Map




Hello, I am a 9th grade student here at GCE Lab School and I have been taking a class here called Thin Red Lines, TRL for short. This is a Humanities class that's main focus is maps, that is one of the many reasons it is called Thin Red Lines. Ever since this course started, I learned so many new things about maps that I never even knew about before. Instead of showing a big picture used for directions, each map has its own interests and disinterests. Yet, no matter how many maps we make, they still wouldn't have any interest because the world keeps on changing. But that doesn't mean we stop using them.

On one field experience, we were split up into groups and each were chosen a location to reach, using a map. It was a map of Chicago and its interest was, well, Chicago. When one group reached their location, we switched off to the next one. While each group went they got timed by our teacher until they got to their destination. My group was the first one to go. While we were leading the class to our location, we had to hop on buses, cross streets, and do a lot of walking. But eventually we made it. So for this final AP, we were told to make a transformational map of a area of our choosing in Chicago. Our transformational maps are supposed to contain data of our area from the past, present, and future. Below, is a video of my transformational map of Hyde Park Chicago, and everything about it. The research I have done for this literature review all had one thing in common, which are the things  we can do to save the planet. However, these are not like the more simple ideas you are normally suggested, like solar panels and planting more trees. These are unique and intuitive ideas we can use to start tackling these planet related issues from a new perspective. "I drink you need some water..."

Our class recently completed H2O: Unit 1 (71%). In this unit, we learned about the challenges people face to acquire fresh, potable water. In many developing countries, including areas of the United States, people struggle for access to this vital resource.  The mission of the first H2O Field Experience was to carry water 0.2 miles from the Chicago River back to GCE Lab School. During the experience, my body felt incredibly sore trying to navigate the bumpy sidewalks with heavy buckets on wheels. Pushing the large buckets over cracks proved to be difficult. Psychologically, I became frustrated about how slow I was moving and how heavy and awkward the buckets were. The most challenging part of this External Investigation was when the buckets fell over three separate times, spilling much of my original water supply. Welcome to my second Action Project blog for Population class. In this unit, we studied how species thrive in their natural habitats and how their special traits allow them to do so. A Field Experience to the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum taught us about many different landscapes and the animals that live in them. The purpose of this AP was to discover if a certain species or organism could survive in a habitat different from it's own. The species I chose to study was the Chinese Water Dragon, also known by it's scientific name  Physignathus cocincinus. I, hypothetically, altered the Chinese Water Dragon's tropical Asian climate by drying it out.
