Writing with a Recipe

This final week of my Professional Immersion Experience was similar to the last one. Our goal is to make something for lunch by Thursday, and learn new cooking skills as we go along. I have really learned a lot from Chef Mike these past two weeks - I just wish I had more time with him to learn other interesting things about cooking. Unfortunately, two weeks isn't a lot of time to get far into the world of cooking and hospitality. My main goal for the PIE was to listen to Chef Mike, do what exactly what he expected of us, and especially learn new things. Let's say we had to cut raw chicken for a dish we were making. Before beginning, Chef Mike would give us a short demonstration on how to handle and cut the raw chicken properly. We would repeat his actions step by step. We listened intently to Chef Mike, learned how to cut a raw chicken properly, and would help create the dish we served to everyone on Thursday. Since our consumers could become ill if we mishandled the raw chic...

Welcome to the final Action Project for my first HUMANITIES class of Junior year - Rhetoric. Rhetoric is the art of persuasive speaking or writing, using figures of speech and other techniques in order to make it effective. Compared with previous units, in this unit we learned more about the history of rhetoric and how it has been used over centuries and has evolved. One of the biggest topics we went over was the history of the British Parliament versus the colonists of the United States. There was a war of words between America and England long before the revolutionary era. Although they were arguing with one another, they seemed to use the same rhetorical devices we use today to get their points across. For this action project, we were assigned to either write or create a piece of RhetoArt that symbolizes a current issue affecting the world today. I hope you enjoy! __________________ I am someone who cares about the world and the mental state of which it's people are in. The ...

I Want to Ride my Bicycle! I Want to Ride my Bike!

Image
Welcome to the final Action Project for my first STEAM term of Junior year - Design and Engineering. For one of my favorite FE's, we visited Working Bikes - a shop that recycles used bikes. Some are repaired and sold on the floor, but many are donated to developing countries around the world. We helped prepare a shipment of bikes for delivery to Jordan. In class, we learned about gears, gear ratios, circles and ellipses, etc. For this action project, my entire class was split into groups of two. I was paired up with JC. Using empathy, we were to design a bike for a persona assigned to us. The first thing we did was split up the different tasks in order to work through the project. JC and I had to consider all of the needs and obstacles of our assigned persona in order to design the perfect bike. Now, here we are, a complete action project about a bike that hasn't been invented for a kid who doesn't exist! Ha ha. My partner and I worked really hard and tried to be as though...

The Opposition

Image
We are the opposition. We are here to inform you of important information regarding the marijuana legalization act in Illinois via the following op-ed.  In this second unit of Rhetoric, we learned about stylistic devices, European Colonization, and how to advertise with rhetoric. We also went to interesting places around Chicago, including Leo Burnett and the Chicago Music Exchange, and talked to people like, Troy Laraviere. At the end of this unit, we learned about op-eds and how they communicate a person’s point-of-view. We were given the assignment to read an op-ed by Troy Laraviere in the process of making this one. In my action project, I write about the marijuana legalization act in Illinois in the form of an op-ed. I write about how it can affect our state, positively and negatively. The requirements for an op-ed are quick paragraphs, timely topics, the use of rhetorical appeals, the use of stylistic devices, and the arguments I bring towards it. I hope you enjoy! —— I...

Cause it's a TILLER!

This unit was about the basics when it comes to tools. We learned about simple machines, some geometry, and how to know what people want in a tool. The purpose of this assignment is to gather feedback about a certain tool from people who use it and improve the tool upon that feedback. So what I did was gather some knowledge from a user of a tool and what they want more out of it so I can add what they want to the tool. These tool users are senior citizens. What makes these tool users unique are their inability to perform simple tasks that they could handle more easily when they are younger. I must use empathy to gather the knowledge I need about them when they use this tool. Empathy is when you put yourself in another person’s shoes and know what they struggle with. In this case, I put myself in a hand rake consumer’s shoes to know what a better hand rake should have. The slideshow below will show the idea my partner and I came up with. I hope you enjoy! In conclusion, the A...

Throwing the Book(er) at Guns

This is my first Humanities course of Junior year, Rhetoric. According to the dictionary, rhetoric is the art of persuasive speaking or writing, using figures of speech and other devices and techniques. What we have learned over the past few weeks of this class are the roles that are played when one uses rhetoric - the rhetorical appeals, stylistic devices, etc. Some rhetorical devices include allusion, analogy, anaphora, simile, and metaphor. For this action project, I was to pose as the 2020 Democratic presidential candidate, Cory Booker, and respond to a question he feels passionately about in about a two-minute time-slot. Using ethos, pathos, and logos to establish credibility and appeal to the audience, I attempt to change the minds of gun owners, and identify with those who already support gun control. I address sensible gun laws, while giving facts to support my platform on gun control. I (the speaker) am wearing the persona of Cory Booker, or someone pretending to be him, and I...

Stressed Out

Welcome to my final action project for the class called Cure. For this final unit of Cure, we mainly focused on math equations. But there were some other things like how a disease or disorder can be passed down in a family tree. For this action project, I will be coming up with a patient and making demographics for him. I named the patient Ted Lurchenson. He is a clothes designer who has high blood pressure passed down to him in his family tree. These demographics will contain information about his family tree, current lifestyle, etc. This action project relates to Cure because I am coming up with treatment options of many kinds to help cure this patient of high blood pressure. I do that by coming up with options for a new diet, exercise, and medications. I had a lot of fun making this action project and with this class. I hope you enjoy!
